St. Marys' Kyle Davies pulled away from Madonna's Jimmy Deter for the convincing
victory. Deter was easily 2nd. Williamstown's Austin Williams nipped Valley Wetzel's
Casey Pingley for 3rd.

200 Meter Dash
St. Marys' Kyle Davies closed the door on his historic 40 point weekend with a sound victory
in the 200. He won by nearly half a second. Williamstown's Adam Kerns edged out Pocahontas'
Tanner Graham for 2nd. One of my predicted placers qualified for finals but didn't run.
RunWV's Current Score: 9 of 12.
400 Meter Dash
St. Marys' Kyle Davies pulled away late to take the win in 50.71. He was the only one under
51 seoconds. Pocahontas's Tanner Graham was the only other one to come in under 52 with his
51.24. Charleston Catholic's Will Dobbins and Williamstown's Adam Kerns came in under
52.5 seconds. One of my predicted placers did not run.
RunWV's Current Score: 14 of 18.
800 Meter Run
Mount Hope's Kyle James took the field out hard going through the opening lap in about 56
seconds. However, Richwood's Derrick Chaffin was able to muster the final kick to get by
him for the win. Chaffin and James became the first Class A runners to eclipse the 2:00 barrier since
the split into 3 divisions. Chaffin, of course, is credited with a new State Meet Record with
his 1:59.76. Charleston Catholic's Seth Ritchie, St. Marys' Eric Hamilton, and
Pocahontas' Abram Rittenhouse were all under 2:02 a year after no one went under 2:03.
RunWV's Current Score: 20 of 24.
1600 Meter Run
Richwood's Derrick Chaffin and Andrew Shaffer took the field out hard in 65. After
two laps, they were joined by Pocahontas' Abram Rittenhouse, with all three going through
in 2:16. Buffalo's Dylan Rich and Doddridge's Tanner Mattie were just a second behind.
Rittenhouse took the lead at the end of the 3rd lap at 3:26. Chaffin and Shaffer came through in
3:27. Mattie crossed in 3:28 with Rich close behind. On the final lap, it was Chaffin who proved
to have the strongest kick. He closed in 63 seconds to take the win by less than a second over
Rittenhosue, who closed in 65. Shaffer easily held onto 3rd, and Rich pulled away from Mattie late
for 4th as the front five all went under 4:40.
RunWV's Current Score: 25 of 30.
3200 Meter Run
Richwood's Andrew Shaffer went out extremely fast, touring the first lap in 64 seconds. After
two laps, Shaffer still led at 2:19. Doddridge's Tanner Mattie was running 2nd in 2:21.
Richwood's Derrick Chaffin and Pocahontas' Abram Rittenhouse crossed in 2:22 and 2:23,
respectively. On lap 3, Mattie joined Shaffer at the front, and they generated a 3 second gap on
Chaffin and a 5 second gap on Rittenhouse. At the 1600 meter mark, Shaffer and Mattie remained
together, coming through in 4:48. Rittenhouse had passed Chaffin as the pair crossed in 4:54 and 4:55,
respectively. Those five were 8 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. After five laps, Shaffer
and Mattie were still together and they had generated a 6 second gap on Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse
had put a 3 second gap on Chaffin, who was 11 seconds ahead of everyone else. After 6 laps, Shaffer
and Mattie were still together, but the lead on Rittenhouse had shrunk to 3 seconds. At the end of
the 7th lap, Rittenhouse moved to the front, trailed closely by Mattie and Shaffer. On the final
lap Rittenhouse was able to pull away for the nearly 2 second win, while Shaffer was able to move
back into 2nd, two seconds ahead of Mattie as the front three all crossed under 9:55. Chaffin easily
held onto 4th. St. Marys' Jordan Whitehair nipped Doddridge's Caleb Moore for 5th in
a race that had to be broken down to the thousandths place.
RunWV's Current Score: 29 of 36.
100 Meter High Hurdles
Doddridge's Zach Holden got a good start and led to the first hurdle and stretched his lead
thoughout as he defended his title from a year ago. He won by nearly 0.7 seconds. East Hardy's
George Maddox edged Clay-Battelle's Dylan Opyoke for 2nd. Charleston Catholic's Ronnie
Baker also came in under 16.50. The race was marred by a pair of disqualifications (both of whom
I had predicted to place).
RunWV's Current Score: 33 of 42.
300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles
Doddridge's Zach Holden held off Buffalo's Matt Moore for the win as each clubbed at
least one hurdle during the race. Moore edged out Meadow Bridge's Devonte Pettit by just 0.02
for 2nd place. Those three were under 41.7. Only Doddridge's Daniel Plaugher was under 43 seconds
among the rest of the field.
RunWV's Current Score: 36 of 48.

Charleston Catholic received a 2:02 lead leg from Seth Ritchie and never trailed the rest of the
way in taking the 2 second victory. St. Marys got a 2:00 anchor leg from Eric Hamilton to secure
2nd place as the front two teams both came in under 8:30. Wheeling Central and Buffalo came in under 8:36
in taking 3rd and 4th, respectively.
RunWV's Current Score: 57 of 72.
Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Doddridge took the lead on the opening leg and never looked back in taking the win by nearly a second.
They were the only team to eclipse the 60 second barrier. Charleston Catholic and Bishop Donahue came
through under 61 seconds. Wheeling Central and East Hardy came in under 61.2 seconds.
RunWV's Current Score: 62 of 78.
High Jump
Wheeling Central's John Belancic overcame some early misses to clear 6'2 and take the win.
Gilmer's Anthony Aviles and South Harrison's Isaac Gaines also cleared 6'2. Mount Hope's
Kyle James and Buffalo's Tyler Allen cleared 6'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 67 of 84.
Pole Vault
Williamstown's Matt Looney and Charleston Catholic's Keiffer Reed were the only vaulters
to clear 12'6 with Looney winning the tie-breaker. The remaining placers all cleared 12'0. 2nd through
6th place return next year setting this up to be a tough event yet again in Class A.
RunWV's Current Score: 72 of 90.
Long Jump
St. Marys' Kyle Davies was the only jumper to get past 20' with his jump of 20'7. Mount
Hope's Andrew Humphrey came out on top of the close battle for 2nd as 2nd through 4th were
separated by just 1.75".
RunWV's Current Score: 75 of 96.
Shot Put
Wheeling Central's Aaron Schneid was the only competitor to surpass 50' with his toss of 50'2.
Williamstown's Cody Matheny was just shy of 49'. Richwood's Jacob Jones just missed
hitting 48'. No one else was over 45'. Places 4 through 7 were decided by just 5 1/2 inches.
RunWV's Current Score: 79 of 102.
Discus
Wheeling Central's Aaron Schneid made it two for two by taking the discus title by just 7 inches.
His throw of 149'0 narrowly surpassed Williamstown's Jakeb Elliott's throw of 148'5. Only
Richwood's Jacob Jones through over 140' among the rest of the field. All six placers through
over 130'.
RunWV's Current Score: 84 of 108.
The final score of 84 of 108 means that 77.8 % of the people picked to place did indeed place. Congratulations to those that proved me wrong.
